Family photos should feel like a joyful, connected experience, not a battle to get everyone looking at the camera. As a Chattanooga family photographer (and a mom myself), I’ve learned that the secret to happy kids and beautiful photos is actually pretty simple: let them be themselves. In this post, I’ll share exactly how to prepare your little ones so your session feels natural, relaxed, and full of genuine smiles.

Embracing Play Over Perfect Poses in Your Chattanooga Family Portrait Session

The truth is, kids don’t love being told to sit still and smile on command... and that’s okay. I build my sessions around games, movement, and moments of connection. That might mean we race across a field, play ring-around-the-rosie, or let your toddler show off their best silly dance. When your kids are having fun, genuine smiles and laughter happen naturally.

How Parents Can Help Keep the Energy Positive

Your role during the session is actually very simple: keep smiling and enjoy your kids. Even if your toddler decides they’d rather run in circles, I’ll be the one engaging them, encouraging smiles, and gently guiding them back into frame. And if they need a moment to decompress after a meltdown, no problem. We'll let them take the time they need to play, explore or relax without feeling rushed or pressured. When parents stay relaxed, kids pick up on that energy, and the whole session flows better.

The “Keep Smiling” Rule:

If I’m adjusting my camera settings or calling out to your little one, don’t pause your smile or look away. Those quick in-between moments often become the most cherished images. I'll sprinkle in lots of transition time and let you know when it's ok to stop smiling by saying something like "Ok, you can relax now".

Setting Expectations Before the Session

A quick pep talk before your session can go a long way. Let your kids know this is a chance to play together as a family, and that there might be some fun surprises along the way. Avoid telling them to “be on their best behavior” or “smile for the camera”. We want them to feel free to relax and be themselves.

Why Natural Moments Photograph Best

While we’ll grab a few traditional “everyone smiling at the camera” shots, most of your gallery will be filled with the connection and joy that happen between poses. These are the images that bring back the memory of your child’s laugh, the way their hand felt in yours, or how they ran full-speed into your arms.

Family photos don’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation and a focus on connection, your family portrait session can be a time you truly enjoy, and you’ll walk away with images that feel like you. If you’re ready to create those kinds of memories, I’d love to chat about your next session.
